Tomahawk vs Hatchet – What You Should Know

Tomahawks, with their lightweight heads and medium-length handles, were first developed by Native Americans to be used as tools, or more commonly, as weapons. Hatchets, on the other hand, are designed to be used more as tools for chopping, shaving, splitting, and other things. 

Both Tomahawks and hatchets are smaller, more unique versions of an ax. Therefore, it isn't surprising that they have a lot in common, like – having the same basic shape of an ax. Historically, the head consisted of a stone that narrowed to a blade on one end, attached to a short, oftentimes wooden handle.

However, the two are essentially different in many ways –
  • Since tomahawks have lightweight heads and medium-length handles, tomahawks are designed for tactical uses.
  • Hatchets are tools, that, with their large, wedge-shaped heads and short handles are easy to control are versatile and can be used in multiple situations like chopping, splitting kindling, hammer in tent stakes and more. This makes them essential for any survival kit.
  • While Tomahawks are good for throwing, hatchets are not. This is because of the weight distribution and design. Since hatchets consist of a small handle and the majority of the weight is in the head, they aren't ideal for a throwing weapon.
  • Tomahawks, on the other hand, have a thinner head that's lightweight and generally detachable. The even weight distribution and the lightweight make it aerodynamic, possible for the tomahawk to be used as a throwing weapon.

Tomahawks have been around a long time, from when bones or stones were used to make the head instead of the modern steels that are used today and have essentially remained the same in its use design throughout the ages. 

Some things to keep in mind -
  1. Hawks are light and easy to carry.
  2. Hawks can be used for chopping but probably not for splitting.
  3. Hatchet was designed as a tool, with the handle shaped to fit the hand for a better grip.
