Choosing the right cooking knife for yourself

A cooking knife is perhaps the most widely used kitchen tool. Everybody, right from the biggest of chefs to the guys living in rented apartments, tend to use a kitchen knife at least once while cooking. To be honest, a kitchen knife happens to be a cook/chef’s best friend. Right from slicing a lemon to chopping veggies, a kitchen knife serves a wide range of purposes.

If you ask a chef, he will tell you that a Damascus steel  knife is the ideal tool for carrying out all kinds of cutting and chopping tasks. Experienced chefs tend to go for custom-made Damascus steel knives. The idea behind this exercise is to own a knife that is designed to accomplish a specific task.

If you wish to get a customised knife made, then you will have to find vendors providing heavy-duty knife blanks in the UK.

Here are a few things that need to be kept in mind before you plan to buy a kitchen knife:
  • Weight: Well, you’ll have to try a lot of knives before shortlisting your favourites.
There are two contrasting schools of thought:

  1. There are some who believe that a heavier knife is the ideal kitchen knife as it cuts through food easily and quickly. A heavier knife makes cutting tasks easier it tends to ‘fall’ with force.
  2. Also, there are those who think that a lighter knife is the ideal knife as it can be moved much more freely as and when compared with a heavier knife.  At the end of the day, it’s a matter of personal choice.
  • Size: A six-inch knife is easy to use but cannot be used if you are planning to chop a large number of vegetables. A 10-incher lets you have more volume but isn’t all that agile. If you wish to get the best of both worlds, then you can use an 8-inch knife. It is both agile and suitable for carrying out large-scale cutting and chopping jobs.
  • Handle: This is the most important part. Your knife’s handle happens to be the most-important part of the knife. No matter how sharp the knife is, if its handle is not sturdy enough, the knife is redundant.

Keep all of these things in mind before going out to buy a set of kitchen knives.
